Welcome, Vanna!
Hello, Christina. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your blog.
When and who influenced you to start writing?
Hello, Christina. Thank you for inviting me to be a part of your blog.
When and who influenced you to start writing?
I have many writing influences spanning various genres. My favorite authors are (in no particular order) Ernest Hemingway, Mark Twain, J.K. Rowling, Agatha Christie, George R.R. Martin, J.R.R. Tolkien, Charlotte and Emily Bronte, and more. I can't say any particular novel, or story influenced me to write though. I always enjoyed reading, and started writing creatively almost as soon as I learned how to write. These were no masterpieces, but I've always enjoyed writing stories.
I got more serious about writing in High School, and was lucky enough to have a very supportive English teacher. He not only overlooked my habit of turning in short stories instead of book reports, but actually liked the stories I wrote enough to discuss them with me after class. He went on to form an after school creative writing class, which is where I learned a lot about plotting, characterization, and other areas of the craft of writing. His support definitely gave me the courage to believe that I was a good enough writer to dream of one day publishing a book.
Tell me about your journey, from writing to publishing, your first novel. Why did you go the route of self publishing over traditional publishing?
Like I said above, I've dabbled in writing for a very long time before finally deciding to give it a go, and try to write an entire novel. Protector took me almost two years to complete. I had the rough draft done in under two months, but I am not a natural when it comes to editing what I write. It took me over a year to edit the manuscript for Protector into a publish-ready state.
I chose self-publishing over traditional publishing for the simple reason of not being willing to wait a year, or two before someone chose to publish it. I'm also an entrepreneur at heart, and like the idea of having complete control over the finished book. I do think I would have been able to sell Protector to a publishing house eventually, but given the exciting opportunities in the world of indie publishing opening up right now, I thought I would skip the long querying process and just do it myself.
I love your concept of the Veil, separating two worlds. Tell me about Protector. Where did you get the idea?
Thanks. I got the idea for Protector after researching the new age theory of Twin Souls. Basically, the theory is that each person has a sort of soul mate, called a twin soul or twin flame, but they only rarely come together in their lifetime. The only time they do is when their combined energy is needed to right some wrong in the world. In order to make a fantasy novel out of this theory, I created a world in which this process of bringing twin souls together was commonplace, institutionalized. This is only a part of the final story, the other issues I explored was how forced separation of something that should be whole destroys the natural balance, and how religious teachings can be used to steer the masses.
That's just the background though. My main strength in writing lies in creating believable and deep characters, so these are actually at the heart of Protector.
Having read Protector, the first installment of the Anniversary of the Veil series, I’m hooked! When can I expect the next book?
I'm planning to release Book 2, titled Decision Maker, in Autumn 2012. I have about one third of it already written, and am hoping to finish the first draft by June.
Cover design is a very important part of publishing a novel. What was your mindset when designing your cover?
Initially I hired a designer to create a cover for me, but I wasn't very happy with the result. In the end, I designed the cover myself. I wanted something catchy, yet symbolic and simple at the same time. Once I mastered the basics of photo editing, and did some research into what makes a book cover effective, I think I did Okay.
Well, I can tell you I absolutely adore the design. It reminds me of the simplicity of the Twilight and Hunger Games covers. Do you have any advice for aspiring writers?
Formerly, I would have said that the most important thing is to write something, anything every day. I still think that's good advice. However, after the grueling month and a half I spent on the final revision of Protector, I think that the most important lesson is never to stop trying to improve your writing. Be absolutely sure that your final version of a novel, story, poem, whatever, is the absolute best you can produce at this point in time.
Also, consider every criticism you receive on your writing as a path to improvement. A lot of writing is rewriting, since it is the revision that will ultimately get you the book you wanted to write.
What are you most looking forward to in 2012?
Writing and publishing a book has been my dream for a very long time. I am very much looking forward to striving to make a success out of my indie publishing endeavors in the coming year. That, and finishing this story that I started with Protector.
Thank you so much for stopping by.
Always a pleasure, Christina.
About Vanna:
Vanna Smythe is the author of Protector, the first book in the Anniversary of the Veil fantasy series. She has been writing creatively since her early teens, though one could say her creative writing efforts started long before that. While still in kindergarten, she once tore up a library book to make alphabet soup, and has been fascinated with what words can do, the pictures and worlds they can create, ever since. Book two of the Anniversary of the Veil series, Decision Maker, is due out in Autumn, 2012.
